So you've signed up as a SimplyNet customer, received your new modem, and successfully connected — great! But then your Apple device tells you your Wi-Fi security is weak. What does this mean? Do you need to be concerned? Read on for more details.

Your Wi-Fi is Probably Perfectly Secure

With a SimplyNet rental modem, you will typically receive one of two devices: a CBN CH8568 or a Sercomm DG4244. This message is most commonly seen with the CBN devices. While these modems are not configured to use the WPA3 protocol, they do use WPA2-PSK (AES) — which is a fully secure and widely accepted standard. You can verify this yourself by logging in to the modem's settings page and checking the security configuration.

So What's the Difference Between WPA2 and WPA3?

WPA3 is considered stronger for security, and the newest Apple devices prefer it. However, WPA3 can sometimes cause connection issues for older hardware — making WPA2 a more stable choice for mixed-device environments.

WPA2-PSK (AES) is perfectly acceptable and secure. A strong Wi-Fi password helps keep you even more secure.

If you absolutely need WPA3 — for example, for a specific device that won't work with WPA2 — you can:

  • Request a Sercomm DG4244 modem instead
  • Request a bridge modem to use with your own personal router, which lets you choose your preferred security settings
⚠️

Please note that SimplyNet is unable to help you troubleshoot or configure a personal router. This option is best suited for users with router experience.

Can I Make the Warning Message Go Away?

The short answer is "maybe." Unfortunately, we're unable to troubleshoot personal devices, as there are many different models with different settings. It may be possible to suppress these messages on your Apple devices, but it will depend on their age and settings.

Even if the message is slightly annoying, you are still secured. You can continue to browse safely. And if you ever see any other messages that concern you, don't hesitate to reach out to customer service!

Bottom line: WPA2-PSK is secure for everyday use. We can accommodate WPA3 if needed — just contact us and we'll help find the right solution.
